Hello, radiant soul! Are you ready to become a badass meditator? If you're feeling stressed, anxious, or just plain overwhelmed with life, meditation can be a game-changer.
But let's get real here: meditation can also seem like a daunting task, especially if you’re just starting out. That's why I'm here to give you the run down on how to make meditation fun and enjoyable, even for beginners.
Here are 5 Tips to begin your meditation practice today.
1. Start Small
Meditation isn't about sitting still for an hour & struggling to keep your mind quiet.
Instead, start small with just a few minutes each day. Set a timer for five minutes and focus on your breath. Whenever a thought pops up, acknowledge it, and gently return to your breath. Once you get comfortable with five minutes, work your way up to ten minutes and beyond.
Personally, I like to set a timer for 20 minutes. Also, make sure that your timer sound is soft and gentle. You don't want to be jolted out of your meditation with the blaring sound of a buzzer.
2. Have Fun with It
Meditation doesn't have to be serious and boring. Inject a bit of humor and playfulness into your practice.
Try different types of meditation like guided meditation, visualization, or even dancing meditation.
Light a candle or use essential oils to create a relaxing atmosphere. And if you're feeling silly, try out some meditation apps that use goofy animations to help you meditate.
3. Don’t Judge Your Thoughts
When you first start meditating, you might feel frustrated when you can't quiet your mind. But don't worry – that's completely normal & to be expected! This is the number one most common challenge I hear about from new meditators.
Meditation isn't about getting rid of your thoughts. Rather, it's about learning to observe them without judgment or attachment. Remember, your thoughts aren't good or bad, they just are.
So if you find yourself lost in thought during meditation, simply acknowledge it and gently bring yourself back to your breath.
My formal training through the Chopra Center is in Primordial Sound Meditation, which is a mantra based meditation. One of the benefits of using a mantra is that you can always come back to it when you notice your mind is drifting away to other thoughts.
4. Aim for Consistency Over Perfection
Meditation is like any other habit – the more you do it, the easier it becomes. Set a specific time each day to meditate, whether it's first thing in the morning or before bed.
By creating a consistent practice, you'll start to see the benefits of meditation in your everyday life. Plus, it'll become a habit that you look forward to, instead of a chore.
Even if you miss a day, be easy on yourself. Simply pick back up where you left off and begin again without any shame or self-judgement.
5. Bask in the Benefits
Now, here’s the best part about meditation – the benefits! Meditation can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus and concentration, enhance sleep, improve creativity and increase feelings of happiness and well-being.
From a spiritual level, it can strengthen your intuition, connect you to your dharma (purpose), allow you to experience different states of consciousness, and connect you with the energy of the Universe.
As you continue your practice, pay attention to how you feel after each session. Take note of any changes in your mood, energy, or stress levels and celebrate each small win.
Final Thoughts
Meditation shouldn't be something that intimidates or stresses you out. It's a tool that can help you become more badass and powerful in your everyday life.
By starting small, having fun, not judging your thoughts, being consistent, and enjoying the benefits, you'll soon become a master meditator. So what are you waiting for? Grab a cushion, light a candle, and start meditating like the badass that you are.
