In today's fast-paced world, it's more important than ever to take a few moments for yourself each day. A meditation practice can be the perfect way to do just that, but finding the right environment can be challenging.
That's where your very own Zen Den comes in! .
When I first started my meditation practice, I used to actually wake up, sit up in my bed and begin to meditate.
Can you guess what happened next?
Yup - I would doze off to sleep again. It seemed like using my bed as a space to meditate was causing me to become more tired.
Eventually, I felt inspired to create a sacred place for my practice at home. A place where no one goes except for me (and my cats, obvi). So, that's what I did!
Having my own space that is used for my mindfulness, stillness and meditation practices has really been a game changer for my energy management. Because I've curated my space at home to be relaxing and calming, even just entering the space instantly gives me a sense of peace.
A dedicated meditation room can transform your daily practice into a calming and peaceful experience. In this guide, I'll give you the rundown on all the tips you need to take that first step toward creating your own Zen Den, from what to include to how to cleanse the space.
The first step in creating a meditation space in your home is to think about how you want to feel when you're there.
Do you want to feel calm? Energized? Focused?
Do you want to feel gentle energy flow throughout the space?
Once you know what you're aiming for, you can begin to create the right environment.
Spend some time in stillness really feeling your way to this. Sit with it and see what comes up for you.
Take note of any sensations, images or feelings that come to mind.
Once you have a clear idea of your ideal energy, you can begin deciding on the items you will include. Create a Pinterest board or bookmark websites or even visit your favorite spiritual shop to gather inspiration.
Cushions/Chair
It goes without saying that you'll need a comfortable place to sit while you practice meditation. Some people like to sit on a cushion and some people prefer something with more back support, like a chair.
It honestly doesn't matter what you choose. What is most important is that you feel comfortable during your meditation.
Additionally, consider adding elements that bring you comfort, such as cozy blankets, and soft materials. Combine different textures and colors to make the space feel warm and inviting.
Altar or Table for Sacred Items
One of the most important things to include in your Zen Den is a table or altar for sacred items.
These can be anything that helps center you and bring you peace and calm.
Some ideas might be crystals, essential oils, photos, or your favorite books. This space can be highly personalized and specific to you, so feel free to include any items that resonate with you.
Aromatherapy
Another essential element of a Zen Den is the use of aromatherapy.
Burning incense or candles can help to set the mood and create a calming atmosphere.
The choice of scents is highly personal and can be tailored to your preferences. Popular choices include lavender, frankincense, and sage.
If you stick to a consistent scent, your body will automatically begin to settle down when you are around that scent because it will automatically associate that scent with a state of tranquility.
Soft Lighting
If possible, create your space where there is access to natural lighting. This is going to help you to connect with nature in your practice.
You will also want to choose lamps and lights that are soft and create a relaxing ambiance. Personally, I cannot get enough of the string light look in a cozy space.
Traces of Nature
To add to the peaceful atmosphere, add plants and/or flowers. Incorporate greenery, whether it's real or artificial, to create a tranquil environment and improve air quality.
Soothing Music
Add soothing ambient sound or peaceful music to your space that will help anchor you in the present moment.
You don't need to have a fancy sound system in your space. Simply use your smartphone, laptop or Bluetooth speaker and turn on some meditation playlists from your favorite streaming platform.
Before you begin using your Zen Den, it's important to cleanse the space of any negative energies.
This can be done by smudging sage or Palo Santo. Another option is to visualize a cleansing green light or energy sweeping through the space and removing any negativity.
Take your time with this step and really focus on the intention of cleansing the energy of the space.
You will also need to cleanse the individual items that you will be using in this space.
Another important factor is to keep this space separate from others so that you can create your special area solely dedicated to meditation.
Let's be real though, that might not be possible for you depending on the size of your home and who is living in it. That is perfectly ok!
If a whole room is not possible, section off an area of your living space to create your zen den. Remember minimal furniture, clutter-free, natural daylight, and peaceful surroundings whenever possible.
Creating a Zen Den can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Not only does it provide you with a space to deepen your meditation practice, but it can also be a peaceful refuge from the chaos of daily life -- and who doesn't need that?
Remember that this space should be highly personal and reflective of your unique interests and preferences. Whether you have an entire room to dedicate to your Zen Den or just a corner of a shared space, the key is to take the time to create a space that feels nurturing and calming to you.
Lastly, remember to have fun with this.
So, get those cushions and candles ready and start creating the perfect atmosphere for your daily meditation practice!
