As the vibrant hues of summer begin to fade, we find ourselves on the cusp of a new season – autumn. The transition from summer to autumn is not just a change in weather, but a shift in energy, a time for introspection and renewal.
Recently, I attended a Chopra all-teacher monthly webinar and it was on this exact topic. So much wisdom was shared about how our energy and needs shift as the seasons shift, and it made me realize something.
It seems like I have lost touch with this side of the changing of seasons. As someone who lives in Wisconsin, just blocks from Lake Michigan, it can be pretty (ok, extremely) brutal in the colder months.
Seriously, I am dreaming of the days when I can spend more time in warmer climates during winter!
Anyway, the webinar helped me to appreciate how much beauty there is in the changing of seasons.
It's completely natural to feel energetic shifts during this time.
I've been feeling some pretty substantial energetic shifts within the past month and so many of them align with what I'm going to share with you today.
Below are 11 tips to help you adjust your self-care routine to embrace the essence of autumn, celebrating its unique qualities and nurturing your well-being.
1. Embrace the Harvest Season
Autumn is often associated with harvesting the fruits of your labor – both metaphorically and literally. It's a time to gather the seeds you planted in the spring and celebrate the abundance that has blossomed.
Your self-care routine should reflect this season of plenty.
2. Center & Ground Yourself
As the days grow darker and colder, it's essential to find ways to ground your energy. As nature contracts and prepares for the colder months, we too must quiet our minds and center ourselves.
Longer meditation sessions can help you reconnect with yourself and maintain inner balance. Spend time in quiet reflection, nurturing your mental and emotional well-being.
You may find that the increase in darkness will allow you to draw inward during your meditation more easily.
3. Adapt Your Diet
Autumn is the season for local, seasonal foods. Adjust your diet to include hearty, warming dishes made from ingredients that are abundant in your geographical region.
Soups, stews, and roasted vegetables can nourish your body and soul during this time.
4. Prioritize Immune Health
With the arrival of colder weather, it's crucial to take extra precautions to protect your immune system. Incorporate immune-boosting foods, supplements, and hygiene practices into your routine to stay healthy and resilient.
5. Dress for the Season
As the temperature drops, swap out your summer wardrobe for cozy fall attire. Embrace layers, scarves, and comfortable clothing to stay warm and comfortable.
As I always say, a cozy person is a happy person in the colder months.
6. Gentle Exercises for Mobility
Engage in gentle but strengthening exercises to keep your joints mobile and your body agile. Yoga and tai chi are excellent options for maintaining flexibility and balance.
If you are not sure where to begin, just check out YouTube and follow along for some videos.
I've also found that going to hot yoga classes when it's cold out can be incredibly enjoyable.
7. Slow Down & Reflect
Autumn invites us to slow down and reflect on the year that has passed. Journaling and introspection can help you gain clarity and let go of what no longer serves you.
Just as the leaves are starting to let go of their leaves, if something is draining your energy, now is the time to let it go.
8. Create Regularity in Your Schedule
Establish a consistent daily routine to anchor yourself during the shifting seasons. Incorporate restorative practices such as reading, meditation, or creative pursuits into your schedule.
9. Embrace Coziness (aka, Hygge)
Get in touch with the sensory delights of autumn – the comforting smells and tastes of seasonal treats like apple pie and pumpkin spice.
Create a cozy atmosphere in your home with candles, warm blankets, and soft lighting. Take soothing baths to relax and unwind.
There is a Danish concept for this called hygge so do yourself a favor and embrace hygge within your daily life.
10. Trust Your Intuition
Above all, trust your intuition.
Your inner wisdom knows what your body and soul need during this season of transition.
Listen to your instincts and make choices that align with your well-being.
11. Cement Your New Routine
To ensure your new fall routine sticks, make a list of your self-care practices and review it regularly. Keep yourself accountable, share your goals with loved ones and celebrate small wins along the way.
Autumn is a time of transformation and growth, a season of abundance and reflection.
By adjusting your self-care routine to align with the rhythm of this season, you can nurture your body, mind, and spirit, embracing all that autumn has to offer.
So, grab a warm cup of tea, snuggle up with a blanket, and embark on this journey of self-care and self-discovery in the most delightful season of the year!
